In the early 1980s, a commercial form of jazz fusion called smooth jazz became successful, garnering significant radio airplay. The earlier forms of blues were heard in slave field shouts and hollers, evolving into simple songs with emotional content. His experiments continued with the Dixie Syncopators (1925-27), a larger band with three saxophones and a tuba (Barney Bigard on reeds, Luis Russell on piano, Albert Nicholas on clarinet): WaWaWa (may 1926), for example, popularized the "wah-wah" technique (that he had already tested in Dippermouth Blues).

Along with the influences from the two styles, rock and roll was typified by extensive use of the snare drum. Vocalese reached his highest peak with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross during 1957-62, a group featuring the genius of vocalese Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross (famous for "Twisted") and Dave Lambert. In the 1920's, New York City was home to pioneering orchestras that would greatly affect jazz history. Being the cocky smartass I was at the time, I began playing the tune as a jazz waltz. Song styles include the son montuno, danzon ," and guaguanco, but the main engine is the son. I can only answer in line with what I found to be true on the JCS "Smooth" board (as I'm sure you can relate to as well) and with a number of my personal friends who enjoy "smooth" music. Other Davis alumni dabbled with electronics and rock rhythms but never committed themselves fully to the new sound.

Here are a few new, lesser-known performers who are well worth watching. Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan were among the most influential cool jazz arrangers. Works for: LATIN, LatinROCK & POP (Mix&Match Mega **) A nice, very versatile Latin Pop style that is somewhere between Latin Cha Cha and Rock. It’s nice to know we don’t live in a world solely based on conformity where everyone has to love the same things as everyone else.
