This bass-contrabass instrument is the precursor of the modern contrabass trombone, which is still largely constructed according to the same principles and to all intents and purposes completely replaced the older double slide variety, which is very rarely seen today. Bore sizes for the slide of the contrabass trombone are typically in the 0.567 to 0.635 inches (14.4 to 16.1 mm) range; the most common sizes on contrabass trombones in F are between 0.567 and 0.580 inches (14.4 and 14.7 mm) as the larger sizes are usually reserved for the contrabass trombone in low B♭ Le Cid (Ballet): Trombone 1 part (Qty 2) [A1690]. as with polishing/refinishing anything, the trick is to proceed from the coarse/aggressive to the fine. first, as you have pointed out, if the piece is 'coated', that has to be removed. this coating is properly referred to as lacquer, ('cause that's what it is.) unfortunately, in my experience, the only thing that will reliably remove it is stripper. and not the 'citrus' 'environmentally friendly', stripper either. nope, the nasty stuff that burns when you splash it on your skin. the kind with methylene chloride. foul stuff, but, if you want to get the job done... most of the rest of your advice is pretty good. however, i notice in your picture that you didn't polish the dog covers, and the finials that hold them on. they're supposed to shine too, and they ain't easy. the material you're dealing with here isn't metal tarnish, it's creosote. it comes out of the wood (it's not soot, it's a hydrocarbon chemical. it's also produced industrially and used to waterproof utility poles.) more creosote comes out of softwoods than hardwoods, so if the previous owners burned a lot of pine, it's going to be worse. here's where the aggressive part comes in. i've had the most success with 3m pads and a cleanser called barkeepers friend. this will clean them, but you won't have a high shine. you bring this back with progressively finer steel wool and polish. the best commercially available product for a mirror finish, imho, is maas metal polish. it seems expensive at first, but a little does go a long way.

I skipped the dog covers ( at the little finials at the end of them ) partly because they are difficult, partly because they are so close to the fire that they do not stay polished for long Gavotte (Arrangement for orchestra): Trombone 1, 2 and 3 parts (Qty 2 each) [A4129].

In the mid-18th century the trombone was still used principally in church music (particularly for doubling the lower voices) and in small ensembles: it did not become a part of the orchestra until the late 18th century. The instrument maintained strong associations with the underworld or the supernatural. The use of a trio of trombones - alto, tenor and bass - appears to date from the beginning of the modern phase of trombone usage in the late 18th century, when the instrument was increasingly used in orchestral and band music Symphony No.2: Trombone 1 part (Qty 2) [A1333].
